Lead a “My Advisory” Workshop
“My Advisory” is a 40-minute session from 8:45am- to 9:25am each Friday that school is in session where we invite a small group of interested students from our College and Career Advisory classes to participate in various workshops. Workshops are presented by teachers, staff and community members and are designed to expose a small group of students to new ideas and experiences in an interactive way. Past topics have included: world dance choreography, careers in dietetics and nutrition, Photoshop fun with iPhones, and young men’s life skills. Share your passion, hobby, or area of expertise with our students; you never know whose intellectual fire you may ignite!
We are excited to have a significant number of students attending our out-of-school time academic “Power Hours” before their extracurricular activities begin (3:30pm-4:30pm). Students enjoy this time dedicated to extra academic support but they could use more individualized attention. Come guide a small group of students through their homework or other academic activity any day Monday – Thursday. We are looking for a minimum of one hour per week commitment from volunteers.

Work in Our Legacy Greenhouse and Garden
We have 8 growing beds and a 100 foot greenhouse that needs you! In order to have our greenhouse and garden be the model high school greenhouse and garden in the District, we need individuals and groups to help maintain and grow our space. Choose a time when you are able to come in regularly and weed, seed, water, and complete odd jobs. We are also looking for people who have expertise in carpentry, irrigation, fruit tree pruning and for people to donate garden supplies.
Donate Used Clothes to Planet Aid Bins
Planet Aid, Inc. is nonprofit organization that collects donated clothing and shoes to protect the environment and support sustainable development in communities around the world. Through their schools program, they have placed two bright yellow clothes collection bins out front at Eastern. We are paid on a quarterly basis, depending upon the amount of clothing we collect. Your tax-deductible donations are sold to clothes recyclers for delivery to third-world nations, some are sold as wiping clothes used in factories, and others are converted back to fiber and remade as recycled textile products.
Planet Aid accepts gently used, unsoiled, and functional clothing and shoes donations. Please wash and fold the clothes before you place them in a plastic bag and drop them off at our clothing donation bin. Also, please do not leave items outside the clothing donation box. Learn more at http://planetaid.org/.
Join Companies for Causes
Companies for Causes is a group of CEOs of closely held mid-sized companies who have joined forces to make a collective impact on the community far greater than any one of their firms could achieve alone. Together, they focus on:
- Targeted philanthropy;
- Hands-on engagement from member CEOs;
- Measurable outcomes;
- Projects that will make a real difference to our communities.
The first project’s goal is to improve high school graduation rates at Eastern. You may find them at Eastern delivering new books, hosting a reception for honor roll students, or tutoring students after school. We’re pushing for more funding for DC Public Schools, along with more collaboration between well established non-profits serving DC and newer groups such as ours. If you are a CEO of a closely-held mid-sized company and would like to join the collective, please reach out to Ms. Staten (contact information at top of window).
